HISTORY OF BERLEVÅG (what is special about place)  - themes to build upon

 

(POMOR TRADE)  from ancient times of fishermen's and trading places, Berlevåg was important point, with commercial significance since the 17th century.??? There were small communities consisting of fish farmers, and well visited during the winter season by visiting fishermen.

Berlevåg is a transformed fishing village, the modern prototype - a true expression of a vibrant fishing industry. 

 

About one thousand people live in the fishing village of Berlevåg. Exposed to the open sea, harbour is the true heart of place, without it, there would be no Berlevåg. Construction of breakwaters has taken place from 1913 to 1974 and renewed in 2014.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA - municipality reveranse

As part of the destination development, Berlevåg municipality has “????” as a concept.  Kvitbrakka has therefore also chosen “????”  as a theme for the artist residences.

 

We have an active social life, community centre, swimming pool, cinema, sport clubs and fascinating ski and hiking trails.

inspired by the historical surroundings, the magnificent nature, and the ever-changing weather and light conditions.  The place has several galleries (arctic glass and Cludia atelier), and several artists have established homes and workshops here. exhibitions, concerts and festivals are held every summer.

Today, Lokstallen Galleri is a renowned gallery that arranges exhibitions with national and international artists, and the main house is also used for concerts in the summer. In the pier, the old environment is preserved and is an important part of the trading history in Sortland can be experienced here. 

 

The municipality is now working to make the area a cultural center for residents and visitors to Bø, with a new outdoor stage / outdoor family room with sculptures, a new art playground, a cultural path up to the center, and eventually also a new museum building. Bø municipality wants to develop the museum area into a folk park with art and play as a recurring theme. We want to strengthen this area as an attraction for children and families, and to succeed, the art experience is central.
